Role in Project

Ponikve eko otok Krk serves as the territorial replication partner for the SOWISE+ project in Croatia. Its primary role is to assess the potential for replicating the SOWISE+ model for recovering value from urban biowaste and absorbent hygiene products in the specific context of the island of Krk, building on its extensive experience in separate waste collection, biowaste management and the implementation of the Zero Waste model. It will also engage with local and regional authorities, waste management stakeholders, citizens and other relevant actors, and contribute to communication, dissemination and exploitation activities.

Organization Description

Ponikve has been a pioneer in separate waste collection and sustainable waste management in Croatia. A door-to-door waste collection system has been in operation on the island since 2005. Krk adopted its Zero Waste Strategy in 2021 and, in 2024, achieved Zero Waste Island status — the first island in Croatia and one of the leading examples of island-based Zero Waste management in Europe.
